Decarbonization strategy scope 3 emissions

ÖBB Holding AG | 2024

Scope

A decarbonization pathway is developed based on the proportional material groups identified within the assessed Scope 3 emissions. Procurement volumes from the years 2018 to 2022 serve as the basis for this analysis. Potential increases in required procurement volumes stemming from additional needs for vehicles and infrastructure maintenance due to capacity expansions projected until 2040 are not simulated at this stage. The analysis focuses on specific goods and material groups. A hotspot analysis is used to identify relevant material categories, which are then supplemented with material distribution data based on their relevance to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. For the key materials identified, industry-specific decarbonization pathways are subsequently developed.

Results

The following technologies and processes can support achieving carbon neutrality by 2050:

  • Integration of CO2 emissions from products and services into the procurement process, ensuring sustainability is a core consideration in purchasing decisions.
  • Incorporation of lifecycle costs and emissions into procurement decisions to account for long-term environmental and economic impacts.
  • Training and awareness-building for procurement teams, emphasizing the critical role of purchasing in achieving sustainability targets.
  • Promotion of circular economy practices, both within the organization and through the procurement of recyclable products.
  • Minimization of resource consumption by prioritizing the purchase of durable and long-lasting products.
  • Optimized asset management to extend the lifespan and utility of equipment and infrastructure.
  • Supply-chain mapping to identify key emission drivers and areas for improvement throughout the value chain.
  • Inclusion of sustainability criteria in contractual agreements, with regular reporting and compliance verification.
  • Support for regional procurement to reduce transport distances and associated emissions.
  • Encouragement of low-emission travel and commuting, fostering sustainable mobility practices.
  • Integration of sustainability goals into the broader corporate strategy to align all departments with decarbonization objectives.
  • Staff training and the establishment of a “green culture”, ensuring environmental considerations are embedded in everyday operations and decision-making.
